Carved Jade Mini Cup, Ancient Architectural Art Style, Thai Collectible Piece

Jade is a highly valued gemstone, particularly among the Chinese, who regard it as the king of precious stones. Historically, jade was believed to be a single type, but advancements in chemistry have allowed for its classification into two distinct types: Jadeite and Nephrite.

Jadeite is composed of sodium aluminum silicate and is typically a brighter, deeper green than Nephrite. It is classified as a high-quality jade and has a hardness of 6.5 to 7. Jadeite often exhibits a glassy to oily luster and is found in dense masses containing small crystals. Its color can vary, displaying both dark and light shades within the same stone, particularly in larger pieces. Jadeite is commonly found in serpentinite rock, which forms from the metamorphism of igneous rocks rich in olivine or sodium.

Nephrite, on the other hand, is made up of calcium magnesium silicate and has a hardness of 6 to 6.5. It typically appears in fibrous crystal formations and has a luster ranging from glassy to oily. While Nephrite shares some color characteristics with Jadeite, it is generally darker and less vibrant. This type of jade forms from original rocks that have undergone metamorphism due to heat, resulting in its unique properties.
